Berjaya Hills is a
highland resort destination in Pahang near Bentong, located along Karak Highway
after Genting Highlands. Perched 820 meters high on a mountain ridge, this
integrated resort development features Colmar Tropicale - a French themed hotel
and cultural village inspired by the traditional architecture of Alsace region
in France.
The Japanese Village is also a
popular tourist attraction within the vicinity, along with a spa resort
(Chateau) and championship golf course. Perched high up among the highlands,
the weather is a cooling climate of mist and sunshine, with lush, natural
surroundings composed of rainforests and meandering valleys.
Established since 2000, Berjaya Hills is one of Malaysia's more recent hill resorts, but remains a major tourist destination for local and international visitors. Only an hour away from Kuala Lumpur by car, it shares its geographical boundaries with Genting Highlands across the Titiwangsa mountain range, presenting a convenient family retreat for the weekend in cooling weather.
The town of Bentong, a gateway to
Fraser's Hill, is located 20km north of Bukit Tinggi Resort, while Janda Baik
is a next door neighbour of Bukit Tinggi, specifically at the old town portion.
Best visited throughout the year, average temperatures range from 25-30°C at
day and 18-22°C at night.
How to go Berjaya Hills
Bukit Tinggi Resort is located
about 35km away from Kuala Lumpur, with the fastest connecting route through
the Karak Highway, which can be accessed from end of the MRR2 Expressway at
Gombak. Visitors coming from the East Coast will approach Karak Highway from
the opposite direction, reaching the Berjaya Hills turn-off at km 10. For
visitors without a car, a public bus service runs daily from Berjaya Times
Square at Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur thrice during the day. Once there, a
'free' shuttle service by open-air coach provides transfer services between
Colmar Tropicale and Japanese Village, the only real major attractions at
Berjaya Hills.
Directions (Kuala Lumpur)
From Kuala Lumpur, visitors can
jump on the MRR2 Highway right to its end at Gombak, where the Karak Highway
begins towards Bukit Tinggi and the East Coast. Follow the signboards to
Genting Highlands, paying a tol of MYR5 before approaching the windy mountain
road. While covering only about 35km to Bukit Tinggi Resort, the drive can take
about an hour due to the steep and twisty route, with large trucks providing
overtaking hazards along the way.
After passing the Genting Sempah
rest station, watch out for the exit to Berjaya Hills at left, about 8km later.
From this point on after the guardhouse, it's a scenic journey on a slightly
narrow road all the way up to Bukit Tinggi Resort, climbing steadily through
the highlands with magnificent rainforest scenery.
Eventually, visitors will reach the
ticket booth about 6km away, where a fee of MYR16 is charged per adult and MYR8
per child sitting in the vehicle (Guests staying at any Berjaya Hills accommodation
will get this fee refunded for all their guests). The road then splits up at a
T-junction; left towards Japanese Village, and right towards Colmar Tropicale
Resort, where either place is suitable for lodging your car at a parking space
provided. To get around instead of driving, visitors can also ride on the
'free' shuttle bus provided, which flits between both attractions at regular
intervals throughout the day.
Attraction
Japanese Village
The Japanese Village is a series of
Japan-themed attractions, spread across a garden landscape on a hill top at
Berjaya Hills, Bukit Tinggi. Located five minutes away by car or shuttle ride
away from Colmar Tropicale Resort, the village also comprises the Japanese Tea
House, Botanical Garden, Tatami Spa, Ume Tatami Suite and Ryo Zan Tei
Restaurant. Here, visitors can explore rock pools, koi ponds, flower gardens
and a Japanese tea house, which conducts a traditional tea ceremony several
times daily. Surrounded by lush rainforest, the village is also a popular spot
for bird watching, with views of the valley from strategic points along the
gravel trails.
Botanical Garden
The Botanical Garden is a nature
park situated within the Japanese Village of Berjaya Hills at Bukit Tinggi.
About five minutes away from Colmar Tropicale by car or shuttle bus, the garden
straddles four acres of highland rainforest - only the jungle floor was cleared
of its original vegetation to make way for show plants. The 1km cemented trail
meanders through the garden in a loop, beginning with a sharp descent from the
Ryo Zan Tei Japanese Restaurant at the entrance, then passing through neat
clumps of flowers, herbs and ferns spread between the footpaths and trees. Some
of the other features within the park include a jungle view deck, wooden bridge
and orchid nursery.
Organic Farm
The Organic Farm is a vegetable
plot and horticultural center hidden along a remote road at Berjaya Hills Bukit
Tinggi. It can be reached within several minutes by car, by following the road
immediately at left after the ticket booth (if coming from Kuala Lumpur or
Bentong). The farm's popularity is more attuned to Chinese tourists who are
culturally fond of fresh vegetables, usually visited as part of a group tour
around Berjaya Hills. Meant as a show farm, the crops are not usually for sale,
but visitors are allowed to eat some of the produce on-site as part of the tour
experience. The small harvest of the farm also results in an inadequate supply
for commercial retail.
Tatami Spa
Tatami Spa is a Japanese concept
spa situated within the Japanese Village of Berjaya Hills Resort Bukit Tinggi,
surrounded by lush greenery in a tranquil nature setting. Offering various
holistic health treatments, including aromatheraphy, massage, body scrub and
reflexology, the spa combines these experiences with furo, a Japanese ritual of
bathing for relaxation and rejunevation. The spa center is housed within a
two-storey bunglow, also of traditional Japanese design like the Ume Tatami
Suite, and equipped with modern amenities. A highlight here is the outdoor
onsen (hot spring) bath, housed within a pleasant rock garden facing the
rainforest.
Accommodation
Colmar Tropicale Resort
Berjaya Hills provides budget
family accommodation at Colmar Tropicale Resort, a central attraction of this
tourist destination that houses a French cultural village. Composed of
colourful timber-framed townhouses erected around a spacious courtyard, the
resort houses 260 studio and family apartment units, some with a living hall,
kitchen and one to fourroom configurations with attached bathrooms. All rooms
come with complimentary breakfast at Le Blason. For luxury accommodation with a
boutique spa concept, The Chateau Spa and Organic Wellness Resort sits next
door, just across from Colmar Tropicale along the main road.
The Chateau
The Chateau Spa and Organic Wellness Resort
is a boutique hotel at Berjaya Hills in Bukit Tinggi, offering premium health
treatments alongside luxury accommodation. A sanitised replica of the Château
du Haut-Koenigsbourg in Alsace, France, the resort is perched on a small hill
directly opposite Colmar Tropicale across the Le Chevalier building.
Accommodation is provided in 126 luxury rooms and suites spread across the
castle complex, with facilities that include a swimming pool with salt-infused
water, fine dining restaurants, sophisticated spa treatment rooms and orchid
garden with a costly set of flowers rotated every few months from a nursery.
Ume Tatami Suite
Ume Tatami Suite is a boutique
bungalow of traditional Japanese architecture, perched on a hill slope within
the Japanese Garden at Berjaya Hills Resort, Bukit Tinggi. The house consists
of two floors with three washitsu (Japanese-styled) rooms, which are living or
dining halls during the day, but converted into bedrooms at night (through the
use of futons - bed mats), a yōshitsu (Western-style) bedroom, kitchenette and
three bathrooms with tubs (including one with an onsen-styled bath). An
exclusive getaway going for a premium rate, the bungalow provides luxury
accommodation for eight guests comfortably, with catering and services of a
butler provided.
